Vacationing in Antarctica
Luna stepped off the shuttle onto the icy continent of Antarctica, ready for her summer vacation. The weather was mild and the sun shined down upon her. She checked in at the front desk, where the resort clerk, a friendly woman named Sarah, greeted her.
"Welcome to the Antarctic resort! Is this your first time here?" Sarah asked cheerfully.
Luna nodded, taking in the luxurious surroundings. "Yes, it is. I can't believe how much this place has changed in just a few decades."
Sarah nodded sympathetically. "It's true. The effects of climate change and development have definitely impacted this area. But we do our best to minimize our footprint and protect the ecosystem as much as we can."
Luna was intrigued. "What kind of measures do you take to protect the environment?"
Sarah leaned in, and spoke with enthusiasm. "Well, we use renewable energy sources as much as possible, like wind and solar power. We also have strict waste management and recycling programs in place. And we work closely with environmental organizations to monitor and protect the local wildlife."
Luna was impressed. "That's great to hear. I'm glad you're taking these issues seriously."
Sarah leaned back and clicked something on her computer. "We know that we have a responsibility to protect this beautiful place for future generations. But don't worry, we still offer all the amenities and experiences you could want in a vacation spot!"
Luna nodded, feeling reassured. She spent her days exploring the new landscape, taking guided tours of the stunning glaciers, and even trying her hand at snowboarding on the indoor slope.
As Luna prepared to leave the resort, she thanked Sarah for her help and knowledge. "I'll definitely be back again someday. This place is truly amazing."
Sarah smiled. "We'll be here waiting for you!"
Luna nodded, feeling grateful for the week of relaxation. She left the resort, her mind already planning her next trip to this amazing destination.
The Antarctic Treaty of 1959 sets the continent aside as solely being for research and environmentally protected. Yet there is still a small tourist industry that has formed. As sea levels rise and the planet warms, will we be able to hold people back forever? When the worst temperatures are just brisk, will it turn more into a ski resort than just a place of academics?
