Airborne Arrival
"Where are you?" his wife complained in a video call.
"Traffic," he complained. "Bus isn't moving."
"Get here soon. The baby is almost here."
"Shh," a passenger accosted him.
"Hey knock it off," he snapped. "My wife is about to have a baby."
"Congratulations," another passenger said.
"Babe get here now. The delivery is happening."
"I can see it," he noted, tracking the progress on-screen.
There was a sudden lurch. The bus was moving again.
As soon as they reached the next stop he rushed off the bus and ran the rowhome. Before he could even open the door he saw he was too late.
The drone was buzzing on the sidewalk carrying a box. It was dressed like the company mascot, rocking slightly back and forth as it slowly descended.
"I was worried for a second," he said as his wife stepped outside.
"I had it waiting here for you. I didn't want the delivery by myself."
The drone came closer, softly placing the payload on the pavement then taking off.
"You'll have to pay a fee for late delivery."
"It's fine," she dismissed his worry.
She reached down to pick up the box. She held it out to him. He nervously pulled back the flaps. They had planned it all out nine months ago but now his dreams were coming true.
The baby saw him first. His son. His firstborn. He wanted to capture this first moment in his brain. No technology, or at least nothing more than necessary. Just two men meeting.
"You still think we should've gotten the 2-for-1 deal?" she asked.
"No. He's perfect," he whispered, his voice cracking.
A short story based on this concept I came up with, which is a little silly.
